Methyl α-bromophenylacetate is used in synthetic chemistry as an initiator for polymerization reactions (such as the polymerization of methyl methacrylate). Methyl α-bromophenylacetate is also used as a reagent to synthesize compounds that act as selective Serotonin (HCl: S274980) reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). SSRIs are used to modulate symptoms in autistic patients.
